The Sterling Slide Rule has standard A, B, C, C', D, and K scales. The A, D, and K scales are on the body, the B, and C scales on the slide. The cursor travels the full length of the body, and the hairline crosses these scales for direct comparison. On the reverse side of the slide, the S, L, and T scales appear, and the slide may be re-File Size: 1MB. THE SLIDE RULE The Slide Rule is a time and labor saving instrument for quickly solving problems involving multiplication, division, proportion, squares, square roots, cube and cube roots or any combination of these processes. The operation of a Slide Rule is simple and anyone with a fair understanding of numbers can use one. Slide Rule. A slide rule is a mechanical device that uses the alignment of numeric values marked on sliding scales to perform mathematical calculations. For the past years, the calculations performed on slide rules have made possible such feats as designing the first skyscraper and putting a man on the moon.

A book from the same era as my recently acquired slide rule was the best introduction I could have asked for. It gave the foundations necessary for the on-line manuals available for the different rules to make sense.

Highly recommended for archeotech or retrocomputing people. Read Reviews: 8. The slide rule, also known colloquially in the United States as a slipstick, is a mechanical analog computer.

As graphical analog calculators, slide rules are closely related to nomograms, but the former are used for general calculations, whereas the latter are used for application-specific computations.

The slide rule is used primarily for multiplication and division, and also for functions. The slide rule cannot be regarded as a modern invention since the first design dates from the early part of the seventeenth century, but every year sees additions and variations made and the up-to-date instrument has, as might be expected, advanced greatly beyond the earlier types.

Slide Rule is Nevil Shute Norway's autobiography about his early years as an aeronautical engineer. It only briefly touches on his sometimes parallel career as author Nevil Shute.

For intro books I think a search for slide rule manuals will turn up dozens of suitable results, perhaps including a manual for the very model you end up with. A slide rule is a mechanical device that uses the alignment of numeric values marked on sliding scales to perform mathematical calculations.

Unfortunately, I don't have a copy of the revised edition, but even this early work has a lot going for it. For example, the book shows you how slide rule can be used to I wish he had talked a little more clearly of the theory but I have to say that already having an understanding of logarithms, this really opened my mind to the possibilities of representing them spatially and /5.

The logarithmic slide rule is a compact device for rapidly performing calculations with limited accuracy. The invention of logarithms in by the Scottish mathematician John Napier and the computation and publication of tables of logarithms made it possible to effect multiplication and division by the simpler operations of addition and subtraction.

Introduction to the Slide Rule The words "slide rule" may conjure up images of overwhelming complexity and technical detail for you, but the underlying concept is actually quite straightforward. At its heart, the slide rule is nothing more than a simple and elegant solution for solving basic mathematical calculations.
